Apart from generating ATP molecules, the mitochondria also regulate cell growth and cell death, it signals the cells and generates heat. It plays a major role in cellular respiration. Anaerobic fermentation is another process by which ATP is generated in the body but anaerobic fermentation does not take place in mitochondria.

The most prominent roles of mitochondria are to produce the energy currency of the cell, ATP (i.e., phosphorylation of ADP ), through respiration and to regulate cellular metabolism. The central set of reactions involved in ATP production are collectively known as the citric acid cycle, or the Krebs cycle.

Cellular respiration is the process whereby energy is harvested from carbon compounds (food molecules) as they pass through a series of enzyme catalyzed reactions. The enzymatic reactions of cellular respiration begin in the cytoplasm, but most of the reactions occur in the mitochondria.

Both plants and animals carry out the process of respiration, but only plants proceed to another process called 'photosynthesis'. The process of glycolysis begins in the cytoplasm of the cells and is completed in the mitochondria as you can see in the diagram given above. The simple sugar molecules are broken down to energy or ATP molecules.
